Family Planning & Contraceptive Advice

Infertility Work-Up

Although I do not offer advanced infertility treatment, I do help with the work out of the cause for the infertility complaint.

What I can help with:

In many cases ovulation induction treatment can be enough to help a couple to fall pregnant or simple surgical management of endometriosis.

I check if there might be problems with the women’s ovulation or if there might be problems with the fallopian tubes, uterus abnormalities or endometriosis.

If I assessed the patient and I found no specific causes or she needs specialised treatment, they will be referred to a super specialist that only specialises in infertility.

What I cannot help with:

  • In vitro fertilisation and
  • Intra – Uterine insemination

Contraceptives

These are some of the contraceptives on the market:

Oral contraceptives (birth-control pills) are used to prevent pregnancy. Estrogen and progestin are two female sex hormones. Combinations of estrogen and progestin work by preventing ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovaries).

An IUD is a small plastic and copper device that is put into your uterus (womb). It has one or two threads on the end.

These thin threads hang through the opening at the entrance of your uterus (cervix) into the top of your vagina.

There are two contraceptive injections – Depo-Provera, which lasts for 12 weeks, and Nur Isterate, which lasts for eight weeks.

The most popular is Depo-Provera.

The contraceptive patch is a small, thin, beige coloured patch, nearly 5cm x 5cm in size. You stick it on your skin and it releases two hormones – estrogen and progestogen. These are similar to the natural hormones that women produce in their ovaries.

Implanon is a birth control (contraceptive) implant for women. Implanon is a flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick that is placed under the skin of the upper arm.

Female surgical sterilization is a contraceptive option for women who do not want children in the future. In tubal sterilization, the fallopian tubes are either cut and separated or they are sealed shut. This prevents the egg and sperm from meeting and thus prevents pregnancy.
